frazzled happenings

08 June 2006
You know, people comment all the time in reference to us owning one vehicle and how in the world we manage it. To be honest it has never been too much of an issue, bar some nights where Clare and I have to get up in the middle of the night to go out on a collect-Greg-from-work run.

This week is an entirely different story.

The police department has a new & improved monthly schedule -so the Chief doesn't have to expend too much brain power on actually scheduling folks. Greg is currently on nights. 6pm till 6am. Which is fine, we don't have to take him in or collect him. Anyway, there were a few days of court thrown into the mix this week. So Greg gets to stay up and work all night and continue to stay up to get to and from court. Considering these are DUI & drug possession charges, these dates cannot be extended or moved to a more convenient week. Now, add the fact that Clare only has school this week from 8.15am till 12.15pm each day. And, here's the icing on the cake....no bus service to and from today or tomorrow. Which ultimately equals no sleep time for Greg with court and early dismissals. Today we had to figure out how to get me to work and Clare to school when essentially we have to be at two places at one time. School is a good 26 miles from where we live (why cant they build a Catholic school here!??). Solution for today: Greg stays awake after work, he brings me into work early, and then proceeds to drive Clare to school. There was no available parent nearby to give her a lift home after school. So Greg is hanging out down there waiting for dismissal. We were eager he could log in some volunteer hours (volunteer x amount of hours each quarter and the tuition is lowered). But no such luck today...nothing to do the day before the last day of school.

He went into town there and found a coffee shop so here's hoping some mega doses of caffeine will keep him awake until they can get back here.

Tomorrow was the ultimate challenge. But it looks like a plan is in action and all is taken care of, as of 10am this morning. The school secretary/bus driver said she would take Clare to school for us since she lives in the same city we do (in her own vehicle since, remember, no bus service). A classmates grandparents can collect her from school and bring her back this way since the secretary has to work later than noon (hence why there is no bus service). I guess I can take the Jeep to work and Greg is taking a police car to the mandatory-court-date-which-may-not be changed. What a fiasco. We have never quite run into a predicament as we have this week. School is out for the summer as of tomorrow at noon. By the new school year in autumn, I just hope we have another vehicle in our possession, should any other similar incident present itself in future.

On a different note, guess who is an Altar Girl? Clare had practice last week and bar being a little on the small side which means waiting maybe another year before she can carry the tray of heavy chalices, we are in good shape. She will be the official processional & recessional cross carrier, as well as the holder of the Sacramentary book when needed during Mass. Clare thought she would have to hold out till fourth grade for this special assignment, but the priest announced as long as you have had your First Communion you may serve. Thrilled was an understatement to describe how she felt. Her first Mass as Altar Girl is 24th June. (Note: those who know us, expect a photo in your email afterwards!)

Another busy weekend approaches. Ordination of new priests will be held Saturday in our fair capital city, so we will be making the trek down. Being on Parish Council, and seeing how one of the newly ordained will be coming to our church, we are encouraged to attend. Clare has never seen an Ordination so is looking quite forward to it. We are going back and forth in regards to getting a hotel down that way for Saturday evening since Clare was invited to a special Mass to honour Mother Mary Clare at the Our Lady of Poor Clares Convent. (too many Clares in that sentence) She has been hoping to go since receiving the invitation during Lent. We have been running ragged lately, I would like to actually have a day offso we will see what transpires by the time Saturday morning rolls around. Remember this would involve bringing the doggies should we decide to stay for Sundays event, and then finding a doggie friendly hotel.

I think we might actually have some free weekends in July, believe it or not. I do look forward to a day or two of not having to be somewhere at such and such time. Summer is all about relaxing, right? Somehow the word relax has never been a part of my day-to-day routine. I find it challenging to sit still even in work. I like to be up and about and getting things done. I have been doing some gardening this past week so we are pleased with the results. I have all summer to improve upon the garden. It currently pales in comparison with that beautiful garden we had in Colorodo. But were working on it!

PS: Note to "Aaron"- you are entitled to your opinion as to how well one writes, however, you have no clue where I am from, nor what my family's background is. So why make an ignorant assumption in regards to my "European" spelling habits? I also find it interesting when offering this un-needed criticism, the person in question is never brave enough to leave a contact email. Kids these days....
